9 tips to help you submit a successful Master's application

Our guide ensures your application to our Master’s programmes is smooth and successful.

Watch our video guide to submitting a great Master's application:

1. Submit your application early

The early bird often gets the worm - or in this case, a place in the programme.

Applications typically open in mid-October, and since our Master's courses are in high demand, we strongly encourage you to apply as soon as possible.

You don't have to wait until you finish your current studies - we assess eligibility based on your grades so far. Just remember to send us your most up-to-date transcripts with your application.

2. Gather your supporting documents

Before you start your application, make sure you have the following documents:

  • Academic transcripts: These will either be documents that show your academic performance to date or your final transcripts from graduating.
  • Statement of purpose: This is your chance to explain why you want to study a Master's course and how it aligns with your career goals (more on this later!).
  • References: You don't need to submit an academic reference with your initial application. You might need to submit one after applying - we might email you, so keep an eye on your inbox.

3. Meet the English language requirements

You'll need to provide an English language test score along with your supporting documents if English isn't your first language You can check the English language tests and minimum scores we accept

If you've booked an English language test but haven't taken it yet, let the admissions team know when to expect your results.

You might be exempt from our English language requirements if you've studied in a majority English-speaking country for at least three years. You can check the list of majority English-speaking countries.

If you've only studied in a majority English-speaking country for 1-2 years, you'll still need to provide an English language test score.

4. Check the entry requirements

Each Master's course has specific entry requirements, so check the specific course webpage to ensure you meet the criteria.

Generally you'll need a UK 2:1 honours degree (60% average) or the overseas equivalent to apply.

If you're not from the UK, you can still apply; we welcome applications from all over the world. You can check the international Master's entry requirements - select your country from the list.

If you can't find your country or you want to check your eligibility, contact our enquiry team at pg.ambs@manchester.ac.uk.

5. Write a compelling Statement of Purpose

Your Statement of Purpose is a crucial part of your Master's application. It's your opportunity to:

  • Showcase your passion for your chosen subject
  • Demonstrate why you're a perfect fit for the programme.

When you're writing a Statement of Purpose, you should:

  • Keep it concise - your statement should be between 300-500 words
  • Clearly explain your motivation for applying to the course
  • Show how the programme aligns with your professional goals
  • Highlight your relevant skills and experiences
  • Let your personality shine.

6. Carefully review your application

Before you submit your application, you should check that:

  • All sections are filled out correctly
  • You've attached all the required documents
  • Spelling and grammar is accurate.

Your application is our first impression of you, so it's essential to get it right the first time.

7. Secure funding for your course

Don't wait until you've been accepted to start thinking about funding. Explore your options early on so you can focus on your studies once you arrive.

Funding options

If you're a UK student, the government offers postgraduate loans for Master's students. There are also partial scholarships available across our Master's courses.

If you're an EU or international students, you can check what funding opportunities are available.

8. Remember to pay the application fee

You'll need to pay an application fee for some Master's programmes. It should be clear whether you'll need to pay a fee within your application.

You'll need to pay the fee within the application portal before submitting your application.

9. Check your emails regularly

Throughout the application process, we'll communicate with you over email - make sure to check your inbox regularly. We might need to ask for missing documents or update you on the status of your application.

We wish you the best of luck with your application!
