Advancing my career and knowledge through MSc Financial Management

After completing his bachelor’s degree, Florian embarked on a career in the finance industry, but he was still eager to continue his academic development.

While Florian was searching for part-time postgraduate programmes, the MSc Financial Management programme at AMBS stood out due to its unique blended structure.

Why MSc Financial Management?

"Since I was not interested in studying entirely remotely, the blended MSc Financial Management programme at AMBS was a perfect fit," he shares. "The opportunity to attend in-person workshops in Manchester was a decisive factor, as it allowed for meaningful networking and engagement with peers."

This hybrid format allowed him to balance academic pursuits with professional commitments, making AMBS the ideal choice.

Building on a solid foundation

Florian's undergraduate studies provided an interdisciplinary foundation, equipping him with a comprehensive knowledge in management and economics. This strong base enabled a seamless transition into the specialised curriculum of the MSc Financial Management programme.

The postgraduate experience emphasised applying theoretical frameworks in practical contexts, deepening his understanding of finance while encouraging him to challenge pre-existing concepts learned during his undergraduate studies.

A supportive academic environment

One of the defining features of Florian's experience at AMBS has been the support offered by the academics.

A standout influence during his undergraduate years was economics professor Reza Salehnejad, whose lectures and guidance inspired a deeper interest in the economics subfield of finance.

The opportunity to engage with exceptional academics like Professor Salehnejad is a hallmark of the AMBS experience and was a significant factor in his decision to return for postgraduate studies.

Lessons in learning and self-discovery

One of the biggest contrasts between undergraduate and postgraduate is the emphasis on applying theoretical frameworks in real-world scenarios.

"The postgraduate programme encourages a greater degree of critical thinking, challenging established ideas and raising questions," he explains. This deeper level of analysis proved to be instrumental in his professional growth.

When Florian reflects on his undergraduate years, he credits much of his growth to taking the initiative to shape his own learning journey. Voluntary office hours with professors led to insightful discussions that extended beyond course material, while extracurricular activities - such as serving as president of Enactus - provided valuable leadership experience and a deeper understanding of social enterprise.

These lessons of self-discovery and proactive learning proved invaluable in preparing Florian for the challenges of postgraduate study, where balancing professional and academic commitments required strong organisational and time management skills.

Personal and professional growth

The MSc Financial Management programme has significantly influenced Florian's personal growth and career aspirations. It's not only required him to optimise his time management skills, but has expanded his knowledge beyond the scope of his current professional role.

One particularly valuable outcome of the programme has been its applicability to real-world situations.

For instance, Florian's work in a global, systemically important bank often involves regulatory frameworks. The programme provided him with a deeper understanding of the narratives and assumptions underlying these regulations. This insight has helped Florian to better understand the spirit of regulatory asks and anticipate potential future requirements.

Additionally, the programme revealed the importance of qualitative aspects in finance. A discussion on Paolo Quattrone's Maieutic Machine, for example, highlighted the idea that numbers are only part of the answer, emphasising the need for broader perspectives in decision-making.

Advice for aspiring students

Looking back, Florian appreciates how AMBS shaped his academic and professional trajectory. "I have always enjoyed learning and thinking. AMBS provided me with a holistic curriculum while offering the flexibility to choose a specialism," he says.

"Throughout this journey, I felt supported both personally and academically."

He also emphasises the importance of taking an active role in his education. "One thing I discovered is that everyone is responsible for their own experience and learning journey. If you ask for more, you receive more," he advises, encouraging students to engage in office hours and extracurricular activities.

For prospective students considering a postgraduate degree at AMBS, Florian’s advice is clear: plan.

While the MSc Financial Management programme offers flexibility, balancing work, study, and personal life can be challenging. Scheduling breaks and moments to recharge is essential for maintaining focus.

The programme is particularly suited to professionals who are eager to grow personally and professionally, challenge existing practices, and bring fresh, innovative ideas to their workplaces.

Memorable moments and achievements

Among many fond memories of AMBS, one moment stands out: "The graduation ceremony for my undergraduate degree at Whitworth Hall was particularly memorable, followed by a fantastic reception at AMBS. I am already looking forward to the next one."

Another proud achievement was receiving the Faculty of Humanities Dean’s Award for Achievement, which recognised his hard work and dedication.

The combination of undergraduate and postgraduate studies at AMBS has been transformative for Florian. From the holistic curriculum of the undergraduate programme to the specialised focus of the MSc Financial Management.
