Ben Varley shares his experiences of the MSc Marketing course at Alliance MBS and what he’s been doing since graduating in 2020.
Why did you choose to study this Masters course at Alliance Manchester Business School?
“I engaged in a postgraduate course to expand my academic knowledge and improve my critical thinking skills. Alliance MBS was a clear favourite during my applications for postgraduate study. The course is ranked within the top 5 marketing courses globally, and it is an amazing school with fantastic staff and facilities within.”
What did you most enjoy about your time at Alliance MBS?
“The people – I believe in my cohort we had 24 nationalities spanning between 21 - 32. I loved having the opportunity to connect with various people from around the world, learning elements of their culture and building lasting friendships I am confident will continue throughout life. I think Manchester is incredibly magnetic and is a city full of culture, which adds enjoyment to the postgrad year too.”
What have you been doing since graduation – can you briefly describe your job role?
“After the completion of my master's and a difficult recruitment process, I have joined global IT Consulting company Capgemini, where I am currently enrolled on a project with one of their largest UK clients (HMRC). The role is working within PMO/Capability/Delivery.”
How has your time at Alliance MBS helped you in your current role/with your career?
“I have learnt so much at Alliance MBS, both academically and non-academically. I think moving forward Alliance MBS took me out of my comfort zone by coming face-to-face with various obstacles. I believe the course has allowed me to exhibit the capacity for critical thinking and analysis, use knowledge to solve problems creatively and communicate ideas effectively in a different way to a variety of people; skills I look to utilise in a future career.”
What advice would you give to those considering studying at Alliance Manchester Business School?
“Grab it by the horns. I think you have to embrace that the master’s year is short-lived, so you have to make the absolute most of it. Step out of your comfort zone and create friendships which will last a lifetime.”
What are your future aspirations?
“I intend to build a career in consulting or project management within a preferred field of Tech. I believe the MSc course developed both the correct soft and hard skills to be successful in these fields. I would never rule out coming back to Alliance MBS for an MBA if they are nice enough to let me back.”
