We asked Rejoice Ojiaku to tell us how the BSc (Hons) Information Technology Management for Business (ITMB) course has shaped her career so far.
When did you study ITMB?
I started and finished my BSc (Hons) IT Management for Business studies from 2013 to 2017, which was an incredible experience.
Which aspects of the programme best prepared you for your current career?
I currently work as the SEO Manager at Nelson Bostock. Additionally, I co-founded B-DigitalUK, a community dedicated to supporting Black marketers.
I believe the networking events during my ITMB studies were instrumental in preparing me for my current roles. Since I've been working in SEO, I've had to network extensively, especially at conferences.
Thanks to the practice I got during the ITMB course, I was able to step into these situations without feeling like a novice. Additionally, the competitions we entered helped prepare me for public speaking. They boosted my confidence, which now benefits me when I speak at conferences or pitch to clients.
The marketing module we took was pivotal in my decision to pursue a career in digital marketing. It resonated with me, especially the aspects related to consumer behaviour. This knowledge is something I apply daily in my role, especially when developing strategies and considering customer purchasing patterns.
Why is ITMB so unique compared to other programmes?
The success of the ITMB course hinges on both employer involvement and effectively bridging the gap between technical and management knowledge. Employer involvement is crucial because it immerses you in a professional environment where you are treated as a colleague rather than a student.
This exposure helps you develop confidence, master your knowledge, and hone your creativity in presenting ideas. Bridging the gap is equally important; the ITMB course skilfully connects technical and management concepts through a diverse array of modules that cover extensive ground. This integration not only makes everything click but also opens up a whole new world of opportunities.
Why do you consider ITMB to be the 'unfair advantage’?
I even stayed in contact with the [previous] programme director Ali - the ITMB course helps you build a solid rapport with lecturers because they are so involved in the course.
It's a very fun course and the more you throw yourself into it, the better you build relationships with fellow cohorts or academics . It's a beautiful, shared experience when studying the ITMB course and I honestly enjoyed it so much.
What advice do you have for current and aspiring ITMB students?
Don't confine your job search to only the companies highlighted in the ITMB course. While ITMB is an excellent resource for finding job opportunities, it's important not to let it restrict you.
Explore how the skills you've gained can apply to various fields. Personally, I ventured into marketing, while others have pursued careers in IT, banking, and HR. The true aim of the course is to broaden your perspective, inspire you to believe in your capabilities, and equip you with the tools needed to succeed in any path you choose.
