Manchester has been starting to get chillier and it's relatively cold compared to the same time last year. It has been an exciting month for me so far after reading week, where I had the chance to get involved in organising and participating in a lot of events.
As the vice president of Accounting Society Manchester, I had the chance to collaborate with Mazars UK to organise an office tour of their Manchester office. Mazars is famous for their financial services, such as audit and consulting, so it was a really insightful event for all our members who are interested in having a career in the field.
Besides that, as BSc Accounting students, we also had the chance to visit Grant Thornton Manchester Office to learn about their career opportunities. Following that, we did a social gathering at Junk Yard Golf club where I managed to meet one of the seniors who is currently working in Manchester. It was a great event where we caught up with each other and socialised.
We also visited PwC for a deep discussion with the professionals from the tax department about our upcoming tax projects, which requires us to reflect on the current UK tax system. My initial impressions have changed, I now find tax is really interesting when you can understand the working culture as well as the history of the UK through taxes – as most of them have a really old history.
The most exciting event I attended was probably the Thanksgiving gathering at International Society! I had the chance to meet up with 16 of my International teammates while enjoying the food. It is particularly enjoyable for us now to be guests at the whole event – we did all the preparation and cooking last year! So hip hip hooray…as its now the time for us to enjoy while not doing the hard work. We had mac and cheese and green been casserole which is warm and hearty! I can't wait to participate their following events soon.
I also participated in the Digilab organised by the Library. It was such an exciting opportunity for me, I got to know so much about current technological developments and the latest innovations, such as Cozmo the robot, coding, and Virtual Reality. I do hope to engage in it more the next time and participate in as many events as possible!
