In this blog, I will talk about the opportunities we have as students at Alliance Manchester Business School which range from joining societies, attending events and taking part in mentoring programs.
This month Accounting Society Manchester hosted its Annual General Meeting. This is where the society’s committee highlight the past academic year and the work we have done for our members. This was a fantastic event which included speeches, awards and a handover to next year’s committee. I have been part of the Accounting Society’s committee this year and it has been a great experience. For example, I have had the opportunity to build relationships with firms across the UK to host events for our members and had to plan and manage events hosting 30+ people. This is great for building skills and gaining experience, plus it is great to talk about in job interviews. Accounting Society Manchester is part of Alliance Manchester Business School and works closely with the business school to deliver the best events for our members. There are many societies within business and finance at the University of Manchester that students can join to meet new people and engage in university life.
Furthermore, as I discussed in my last blog, as an AMBS student, I had the opportunity to take part in the AMBS-BNY Corporate Mentor program. This has led to weekly meetings at BNY-Mellon’s Manchester offices with my mentor to build skills to prepare for my future career. For example, last week my mentor and I conducted a practice interview and I received great feedback for future interviews. This is a picture right before I had the interview with my mentor! This is a fantastic opportunity provided by AMBS and BNY-Mellon for students.
There are also lots of other events run by AMBS that students can take part in. Last week, we attended a guest lecture on financial modelling hosted by alumni of Alliance Manchester Business School. Financial modelling is a key skill for finance students and it was great listening to insights from practitioners and seeing how the content we have learnt at university applies in the real world. This week AMBS has arranged an Employer Networking session where employees from companies such as Bank of America, IBM and Deloitte are visiting AMBS giving students the opportunity to build connections with recruiters from these firms.
Alongside the many events and activities we have at AMBS, it is currently the revision period. Fortunately, there have been many sunny days in the past month so it’s been great to walk around campus during revision breaks and for lunch. In AMBS, there are lots of study spaces across the building including the Eddies Davies Finance Zone and Library. There is also the Hive study space which includes group study rooms. Here is a picture of one of the group study rooms at AMBS which are great for completing group work and for working with your friends.
I hope you enjoyed this insight into life at AMBS and the opportunities available for students!
