Bradley West, UK

MSc Management, Class of 2015

Why did you choose to study this Masters course at Alliance Manchester Business School?

My first degree was BSc Geology and I have been a ‘science student’ for my whole educational career up to this point. I chose to do a masters in Management because I have always been interested in being a part of the management side of a business, as opposed to the technical side, and I felt like that doing this masters would enable me to pursue a career where I can be an effective manager. I believe that this allows me to use skills and information learned as part of my masters, while retaining a good knowledge of the technical side of a business, applying my earlier education.

What were you doing before your MSc? (if not answered in question 1)

Answered above.

What are your career plans after graduation?

After graduating, I plan to have a job already lined up, ideally in a management consultancy role, so that I can experience as many different styles of business as possible and develop a knowledge of which practices and concepts learned during my masters, are applicable in the varied scenarios which I will see as part of my role within the company.

What is the best thing about studying at Alliance MBS?

Personally, I think that the best thing about studying at Alliance MBS is the familiarity and community of help and support offered by UoM. I was an undergraduate at the University of Manchester and I found that the University were very helpful in pointing me in the right direction when trying to find avenues to attain the relevant educational awards to pursue my chosen career.

How much time do you spend in classes and in private study?

I usually try to do work between 9 and 5 on weekdays to keep on top of the lecture material and reading set. I can’t lie though; there may have been some days where I’ve got up late, or finished early, after all, I am a student.

How would you describe your student experience so far?

I’d say that I’ve had a very enjoyable student experience so far. I’d put this down to the attitude of the University, which I think is a good balance of emphasising the importance of your education, and letting you chose your own direction as a young adult, and being able to live in Manchester, which I think is a brilliant student city for a number of reasons.

What’s the best thing about living in Manchester?

The best thing about living in Manchester is the variety and number of things that are available to do here and the way that this enables you to really develop your interests and skills outside Uni. As an example, I really enjoy electronic music, and there are so many opportunities to take in different styles, and learn more about it in Manchester that I’ve been able really develop my love of it here.

What advice would you give to those considering studying at Alliance Manchester Business School?

I’d say that I’d definitely recommend applying to study here, and if they get in, that, in the least clichéd way possible, they should really concentrate on doing well in their course and making it work for them in terms of their overall goals. But, they should really try and keep a good balance between work and play to make the most of their experience here.
