Greta Santi, Italy

MSc Business Analysis and Strategic Management, Class of 2019

Why did you choose to study this Masters course at Alliance Manchester Business School?
I applied to several universities across the UK but I knew my first choice would be AMBS because it had something more to offer. The main reason I was interested in joining BASM was the client-facing project at the end of the academic year. It sounded exactly like the best opportunity to apply all the theory and concepts learnt in class and gain hands-on experience before starting my career to hopefully become a future strategic consultant.

What were you doing before your MSc?
I studied in Berlin for my undergraduate degree in International Business Management. While writing my final dissertation, I applied to AMBS and got the offer.

What are your career plans after graduation?
Currently, I’m applying for postgraduate schemes at consultancy companies, however, if plan A doesn’t work, I will try to find another job in a smaller firm in the UK. After gaining a few years of working experience in an English-speaking country, I’d like to return to Italy and continue my career there.

What is the best thing about studying at Alliance MBS?
Studying at AMBS means being in contact with people from different cultures and backgrounds and collaborate with them to strengthen your team working skills. It also means to be part of a medium-size course where you can still build a relationship with your lecturers and ask for support at any time. As a student at AMBS, you’ll have the advantage of being supported by career advisors to help you understand what to do after your time at university and receive job-related advice.

How much time do you spend in classes and in private study?
The course includes four modules and in total we spend 12 hours in lectures and seminars. Even though we don’t have many classes during the week, the workload is consistent and we are being assessed several times throughout the semester. Thus, I dedicate most of my time preparing for lectures and working on assignments.

How would you describe your student experience so far?
After just two months since the beginning of the programme, I can confirm that being student at the University of Manchester has been fantastic. I had never studied in a place where you could attend so many events and with such a good student engagement. You can join any club or society to connect with the people that share your same passions as well as find out new interests. The student community here is very diversified and there are plenty of ways to make new friends from all over the world.

What’s the best thing about living in Manchester?
I haven’t been here for long but what I like the most about Manchester is suitable for those that prefer medium-size cities. There’s everything on campus and it is at walking distance from the city centre.

What advice would you give to those considering studying at Alliance MBS?
My advice to all the students considering to pursue a master degree would be to do what you really feel passionate about. AMBS is a great business school with a vast range of programmes and the environment is extremely stimulating due to a high share of international students. Before you come here, make sure that you have a rough idea of what career path you’d like to pursue and find the most suitable course according to that. If you’re an international student planning to stay in the UK to work, I’d advise you to do your research on what opportunities does the English market offer and how the application process works here.

What was your experience like on the Brathay residential trip?
The trip to Brathay was amazing! It was a great opportunity to meet new people in the course and bond with the ones I was already close with. We challenged ourselves in group activities that you usually don’t get the chance to do and we brought with us some great advice about team dynamics.
