Visiting Helsinki this September (2024), Professor Peter Buckley reflected on one of the most impactful awards he’s received over his lifetime.
This year marks the 20th year of the Viipuri prize, which is awarded every other year 'to a distinguished international researcher whose work significantly influences education and research at the LUT University.'
The highly ranked University based in Lappeenranta, Eastern Finland, is renowned for its QS and THE rankings. It is ranked in the world's top 10 in climate action (THE Impact Rankings, SDG 13). The prize was established by the Society for Viipuri School of Economics (also known as Vitako), and the award is worth 20,000 Euros. Vitako was founded in 1919 and supports the development of LUT University.
Professor Buckley received his prize in 2006 for achievements in strategy research, and international recognition for his ground-breaking research in international business and the internationalisation of business enterprises.
Peter said: "The Viipuri Prize is awarded for excellence in research in business strategy. It was a great honour for me to be first honoured with the award in 2006 in a fantastic initial cohort with David Teece, James March and Sid Winter. Subsequent winners have been outstanding scholars, and it is always a delight to welcome them and to participate in the celebrations."
