Congratulations go to AMBS Senior Lecturer Chris Smith who has been included in a prestigious list of the world’s leading MBA professors aged under 40.
The 40 Under 40 MBA professors list from Poets & Quants is now in its 12th year and identifies and celebrates the most talented young professors currently teaching MBA programmes around the world. Professors on the list come from 34 different business schools, including 16 from outside of the US, and each nominee was evaluated on both their teaching and research.
Chris, whose research areas include facilitated modelling for problem solving and supply chain sustainability, has been involved in the delivery of the MBA at AMBS since 2018, and this year has been teaching Operations and Supply Chain Management to the Full-Time MBA cohort. This is not the first award for Chris who in 2020 was awarded AMBS Teacher of the Year.
Thrilled
Chris, who is also Business Engagement Lead for AMBS, said he was thrilled to be featured in such a prestigious list.
“Being research active and therefore working closely with business leaders and decision makers on projects really helps me in the classroom. I am able to bring out examples from real-world experience in current and contemporary issues that students care about.
“This is particularly relevant for MBA students who like the theory but are keen on the relevance to their career and their overall development. The ‘why’ is as important as the ‘how’ for these learners.”
Rich learning experience
Marie Dutordoir, Full-Time MBA Director at AMBS, said: “Many congratulations go to Chris. This year he started teaching a course unit on Operations and Supply Chain Management on the Full-Time MBA and has received truly exceptional student feedback in his course evaluations.
“The material is taught in a way which keeps the class involved by getting their expertise and input on a topic and using that experience to build a version of the theory/model or framework being taught, and then comparing it with what the established literature says about that area. This engages the class and gives the students a rich learning experience as they can see how their experience relates directly to the course material.”
Manchester Method
She added that Chris’ teaching approach and philosophy truly embodied the AMBS ‘Manchester Method’ of MBA teaching which is based on learning by doing. “This aims to encourage students to step out of their comfort zone and think outside pre-set theoretical frameworks.”
Commenting on the 40 under 40, a spokesperson for Poets & Quants said: “No matter what they study, the courses they teach, or where they work, these are among the most promising young professors tasked with transferring their knowledge and experience to promising young professionals embarking on their careers.”
