This April saw Alliance Manchester Business School open its doors to Global MBA students for workshops, with 379 students from 32 nationalities coming to campus. Students came from a wide range of industries, including oil and gas, not-for-profit, automotive and financial services. A range of job functions were also represented, such as lawyer, project manager, engineer and banker.
The workshops are an intense few days for the students with a host of lectures, presentations and group work. The Global MBA students tackled classes such as Management in Practice, Negotiation Skills and International Business Strategy while here on campus. As part of these classes, the students took part in a range of interesting group games and presentations.
The Postgraduate Careers Service were on hand during the workshop with a range of meeting opportunities, skills workshops and networking events. If a student is considering a change in role or has questions about searching for jobs and career development, there are opportunities for one-to-one sessions with senior careers consultants. The careers team also hosted a 90-minute consulting skills workshop with the Director of Learning at Excel Communications, who gave an insight into the critical client-facing skills consultants need to maximise success. We also welcomed five global MBA alumni to share their MBA and career insights to our global MBA students, with networking opportunities following the event.
The time on campus for the Global MBA students is intense, but for most it is their favourite element of the programme. They love the hands-on teaching, practical application, and learning with a group of people from different cultural and working backgrounds. Xavier Duran, MBA Programmes Director says, “Residential workshops provide a unique opportunity for our Global MBA students to immerse themselves in the latest business and management thinking in an engaging small class setting. Beyond their function as a learning conduit, the workshops also offer an excellent platform for our students to network with senior executives from every professional background and from a large number of countries. Coupled with extracurricular activities ranging from careers development events to guest speaker series, workshops are an intense and sometimes exhausting experience, but one which students usually quote as being the highlight of the programme.”
We met with Elliot Hyde who started his Global MBA journey in January 2019. “The MBA workshops provide great opportunities, not only to learn from the excellent lecturers but to study and network with like-minded peers" said Elliot."I have made some great friends and learned a lot about other people’s experiences and careers. The workshops take a practical approach to learning, which I like – the mix of studying theory and applying it to a particular scenario really helps to reinforce the syllabus. It’s challenging but very much worth it and everyone bands together during the workshops. Choosing to start an MBA at the Alliance Manchester Business School is the best career decision I have ever made.”
