Bridging the gap between classroom and industry
The dynamic world of business demands professionals who can not only manage operations, projects, and supply chains effectively, but also anticipate future trends and adapt to them. Our MSc Operations, Project and Supply Chain Management programme at Alliance Manchester Business School (AMBS) provides students with the skills and foresight to thrive in this evolving landscape.
BP Industry Challenge
Wan Abdul Rahman Wan Azhar, currently studying on the programme, was one of a team of students who participated in a collaborative challenge co-created by AMBS and industry leader British Petroleum (BP).
This immersive experience, titled the 'BP Industry Challenge', tasked student teams with envisioning the future of procurement technology in 2030.
"I'd like to express my appreciation to Professor Fahian Huq of AMBS and BP UK for providing this unique opportunity," Wan said. "The challenge, coupled with the insightful presentation by industry expert Jemima Ahmed, offered valuable real-world perspectives that complemented our classroom learning."
From textbooks to transformation
The challenge wasn't just about theoretical knowledge. Students were encouraged to leverage their diverse backgrounds and industry experiences (Oil and Gas, Energy, FMCG, Logistics) to tackle real-world procurement bottlenecks.
They explored how advancements in technology, such as cloud computing, big data, and artificial intelligence could transform procurement practices by 2030.
"Our team envisioned a future where procurement leverages cutting-edge technologies to enhance efficiency, risk management, and supplier relationships," Wan explained. "We showcased how these innovations can streamline procurement processes and unlock significant cost savings."
Sharpening the competitive edge
The BP Industry Challenge equipped students with the skills to navigate and prepare for a future where technology and innovation are fundamental to business practices.
"The experience underscored the importance of thinking ahead and embracing emerging technologies," Wan reflected. "It also highlighted the value of agility, staying ahead of industry trends, and understanding how technology can revolutionise procurement practices."
Collaboration is key
The challenge fostered a collaborative learning environment where students could share knowledge and expertise. Wan, along with team mates Yenni Rahmawati, Adhiyayna Rifqi Cafriwaka, Widyapradnya Paramita, Rafid Fawwaz Fadhal and Maureen Evangeline Susanto, gained invaluable experience working alongside one another.
"The presentations from my classmates offered fresh perspectives and enriched my understanding of the challenges and opportunities in procurement," Wan concluded.
