Most people know that international Women’s Day is on 8th March every year. It was declared as an official United Nations observance in 1975 and is a national holiday in many countries.
The origins of International Women’s Day go back over 100 years to a National Women’s Day in the US in 1909 and an International Women’s Day in Russia in 1913.
Manchester has been celebrating International Women’s Day for over 30 years!
I have been lucky enough to be involved in the IWD steering group for Manchester City Council for a number of years and I am delighted to share with you what is planned for IWD 2020.
This year the city is celebrating by having a Manchester IWD Walk for Women. And you are invited to be a part of the walk.
Meeting near Manchester Cathedral from 12noon, the walk will commence at 12.30pm going up Deansgate and along Peter Street to finish outside Central Library, where you can wave over to Our Emmeline, before heading inside to warm up and have some more fun. Throughout the afternoon there will be community led performances and stalls providing information about health, employment, education and services for Manchester girls and women.
Everyone is invited to come along and be part of the ‘Walk for Women’. In particular community groups, charity groups, professional groups and business groups are welcome to come along and make some serious noise. So grab a banner and some whistles or drums and join in with the Manchester IWD ‘Walk for Women’.
At the business school we will also be celebrating IWD at our March ‘Women Leading in Business’ (WLiB) event, which is happening on Wed 11 Mar, 9.30-11am.
Register on Eventbrite to come along to meet other inspiring and aspiring women in business and hear from our guest speaker, Susanna Lawson, Founder and CEO of OneFile.
Dates for the ‘Women Leading in Business’ events throughout 2020 are 22 Apr, 13 May, 10 Jun, 8 Jul, 16 Sep, 14 Oct, 11 Nov & 9 Dec. Always meeting on a Wednesday 9.30-11am, I am your host and we make time to network with others and listen to a guest speaker.
It is a growing community of like-minded women leaders who share knowledge and expertise to support each other on their leadership journeys. I hope you can join us!
