South Tees Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust Case Study

Senior Leader Apprenticeship Programme

Healthcare managers face a constant battle to balance excellent clinical care with effective operational performance. Developing leaders who can engage staff will improve organisational culture and put teams in a better place to improve services and processes. Strong leadership combined with clinical and managerial expertise, is critical to the future of the NHS.

South Tees Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust partnered with Alliance Manchester Business School to launch senior leader Masters degree apprenticeships as part of the Trust’s extensive workforce development programme.

Senior leader apprenticeship programmes are carefully crafted to:

  • Provide the knowledge, skills and behaviours required from a strategic leader
  • Focus learning through work-based projects and academic modules
  • Equip accidental managers with the confidence to make decisions that meet both clinical and managerial demands.

The senior leader apprenticeships began in January 2020, initially supporting over 35 of the Trust’s future leaders through health-focused MSc Management Practice and Global MBA courses.

This training will make people provide care in a different way, and the outcome will be that we will have a new way of working together to provide a better outcome as a trust.
