Before you apply for a PhD
Meet the entry requirements
You must meet the entry requirements to apply for any programme in the Humanities Doctoral Academy. You'll need to have:
- A Bachelor's (Honours) degree at 2:1 or above or the overseas equivalent
- A Master's degree in a relevant subject - normally, you'll need an overall average of 65% or above or the overseas equivalent.
- Evidence of English language proficiency - this may change depending on the programme you're applying for, so make sure to check the specific entry requirements.
In some circumstances, other professional qualifications or relevant experience might be taken into account in your application.
Develop your research proposal
As part of your application, you'll need to submit a research proposal. Check how to write a postgraduate research proposal.
You'll also need to find a doctoral supervisor.
Explore funding opportunities
You should consider how you'll fund your research - the earlier you do this, the better. There are a number of PhD degree funding options available including doctoral loans, PhD scholarships and studentships.
Start your application
The final deadline to submit your PhD application is 30 June 2025.
PhD research support and training
We embed the PhD into the research life and culture of the School by assigning you to research centres and groups.
You'll be active in your research centre - involved in things like organising external seminars, presenting your work to peers in internal seminars, and designing and presenting posters on your PhD.
This annual event forms a key part of the Research Training Programme for first year PhD researchers.
During the event, you'll get an opportunity to present and gain feedback on your research from an engaged audience.
Leading researchers from the School and external experts deliver presentations and workshops on key topics. When you're at a more advanced stage of your studies, you'll get the chance to engage with, and enhance, the School's research community.
You'll be able to take advantage of a range of support available from both the School and University to cover conference, travel and research related expenses.
Development workshop
You'll take this workshop in the first year of your PhD to help you settle into the programme.
Presentation skills workshop
In the second year of your PhD, you'll take this practical workshop. It aims to build your communication and presentation skills - crucial for your professional career. There's a mix of activities including:
- Individual coaching
- Group exercises
- Interactive scenarios
- One-to-one training.
The work you'll do draws on the rehearsal model of experimentation and feedback. This aims to encourage you to experiment and adopt new behaviours by working on posture, pauses, volume and other skills.
Writing retreat
In the final year of your PhD, you'll take a 2-day writing retreat. This helps to progress your writing projects and produce a range of written outputs such as:
- PhD chapters
- Books
- Conference abstracts
- Journal articles
- Research proposals.
Benefits of the session include:
- Growing research-oriented interactions and relationships
- Building confidence in research and writing
- Creating cross-disciplinary research conversations.
As a PhD student, you'll get:
